We learned about Wisconsin native Alonzo Cushing this week from George Alexander. 1st Lt. Cushing posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his bravery during Pichett's Charge at Gettysburg.  We also honored charter member Louie Blaser who passed away this year.  Nov 11 was Louie's birthday and a special remembrance of Veteran's Day.

Our featured speaker was Jim Barber from the Waunakee Rotary.  Jim gave an overview of their international project in Kenya, Soar Kenya Academy . Goals of this project include funding a drip irrigation system to enable a year round growing season.  The produce will not only help feed the 220 orphaned students but also provide produce for sale to raise money to sustain the school.  They would also like to purchase a van that can be used to transport students and produce for market.  The fundraising goal is $20,000 with hopes to match with a district grant.

Rotary moments:

  • We are still in need of a few Rotarians to volunteer for SPICE (Sun Prairians Involved in Children's Education).  Please contact Tim Culver as soon as possible if  you would like to volunteer for this mentoring program that will start in January.
  • Creekside Elementary School will have their student appreciation event on Monday, November 17.  Please let Debbie Fox-Schroeder know if you can attend this short afternoon program.
  • The Group Six social was a success with over 40 Rotarians attending from Sun Prairie, Waunakee, Lodi, DeForest and East Madison.  Please thank Rose Freidel for her hard work to pull this off!
  • We officially welcome new Rotarian Joe Pometto.  Joe is with Modern Woodmen.
  • Rotarians Aaron Oppenheimer and Laurie Kreuger were on the local cable station KSUN to discuss Sun Prairie Rotary.
  • The meeting duties list has been added to the homepage.  Please check out the next few weeks to see if your name comes up.
