Meeting Update
Nate Pokrass, Foundation and Tournament Director of the American Family/Steve Stricker Golf Tournament was our guest.  Nate gave an overview of the planning for this tournament that will occur June 20-26, 2016 at the University Ridge Golf Course.  This event is attracting local and national attention.  The tournament is for pro golfers aged 50 and older and will  include many well known names.  This is also a charitable event with the proceeds to benefit the American Family Children's Hospital and several additional local non profits.  The Golf Channel will televise the event which will include  a youth clinic, player hospital visits and a hospitality reception before the tournament begins on the 24th. Additional activities are being planned and the goal is to make this an annual event.  For more information, go to amfamchanpionship.com and strickerfoundation.org.

Don't forget to buy your Kwik Trip cards. They make a great stocking stuffer and a percentage of your purchase is donated to the SP Rotary Foundation! They will be available at the Tuesday meeting or you can pick them up from Laura Jennings at the Colonial Club

Weekly Update
This week Sun Prairie Rotary welcomed fellow Rotarian and Sun Prairie native John Sheehan, President of the UW Health American Center. John gave an overview of the new center that opened this year and is located near American Family.  The 56 bed facility was built in response to growing population in Sun Prairie and the east side of Madison.  There was also a need for UW to have a location that could primarily focus on elective type surgeries for the health and well being of the community.  55% of the positions at the center are newly created, offering job growth in the area.  The center was designed with input from patients and their families. It includes an emergency department,  lab, pharmacy, imaging services and specialty clinics.  There is room for a 28 bed expansion in the future. The facility is also dedicated to being a green facility and serving health food options.

November 17 Meeting Update

Sheriff Dave Mahoney visited this week and gave an update on  the Dane County Sheriff's office, which is the second largest in Wisconsin.  The Sheriff's office works closely with the cities and towns to provide patrolling in unincorporated areas and also provides additional support when requested for the cities and towns.  The Sheriff's office is responsible for the jail, court security, executions of legal processes (such as issuing eviction notices), law enforcement, waterway safety and has specialty teams that include a bomb squad.  Sheriff Mahoney spoke about the home arrest program which is 97% successful. The 3% that return to jail, do it due to rules violations and not for committing crimes.  The jail houses 1013 beds and Sheriff Mahoney emphasized that the majority of inmates need help for addictions and/or mental illness.  He promotes putting resources into programs that address helping people with these chronic issues before they enter the criminal justice system which will effectively reduce the crime and jail rates.

Other Rotary moments:
  • Jane LaMere announced the Christmas party will be Tuesday, Dec 8 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Watertower Chophouse.  Tickets are $25/person.
  • Mark Olsen is coordinating the Spirit of Giving program.  Rotarians are asked to support a child for $35 to buy holiday gifts.  Each table at the meeting was asked to pick a coordinator who will collect the money and purchase the gifts.  The gifts can be dropped off at Mark's dental office or can be brought to the Christmas party on the 8th.
  • Harry and Jerry from Madison East/Monona Rotary are selling cheese boxes for the holiday.  Harry took orders and they will be delivered early December
  • Sue Halambeck spoke about the Kindness Retreats scheduled for the beginning of 2016.  Information about volunteering can be found on the Sun Prairie Rotary website homepage.
  • Debbie Fox-Schroeder gave an update about our volunteer efforts for Farm Technology Days.  SP Rotary made $12/hour per volunteer which equated to approximately $3300!
  • Aaron Oppenheimer is promoting November as Rotary Foundation month.  Each Rotarian is asked to consider donating $100 to the Foundation, which will be made available in upcoming  years  for grants.
  • Don't forget the alternate meeting time on the first and third Wednesday each month at 6:00 p.m. It is a good opportunity to make up a missed meeting and meet some new people!

Thank you for all you do for the community!  See you on Tuesday

This past week, Stacy Darga gave an update on the Community Schools initiative. This partnership provides quality out of school programming for students and their parents.  There is evidence that students that participate in this after school programming have higher attendance rates, higher math and reading scores and a lower number of discipline referrals.  Sun Prairie Rotary provided a grant in 2015 to help fund the Westside (Buena Vista) Community School.  Kids are able to learn about engineering and grew a community garden this year.  The produce was used in the program and offered to families at the school.  Other programs included the International club where families learned more about the cultures of individual students and English in the schools.  This program gives the non English speaking parents an opportunity to learn English and is taught by the Literacy Network from Madison.

The community schools are looking for a program manager and continue to need financial support.  If you are interested in learning more or helping, contact Stacy Darga at Westside School.

Other Rotary moments:

  • November is Rotary Foundation Month. Please consider a donation to the Foundation.  Money donated is invested and can be returned back to the community through grant applications. Your donation will make you eligible for a drawing to match your donations from the Rotary board.  Your accumulated $1000 or more donation will result in  a Paul Harris award.
  • Creekside GRIT celebrations is Tuesday, Nov 10 at 8:40 a.m.  Contact Debbie Fox-Schroeder if you plan on attending.
  • Don't forget to pick up your Kwik Trip cards for that holiday gift or stocking stuffer.  The cards will be available for sale during the week at Colonial Club.  See Laura or the main office.
See you on Tuesday!
