Sun Prairie Mayor Paul Esser was our guest speaker and gave the "State of the City" presentation.  Mayor Esser gave an overview of the 13 new initiatives in the 2016 budget which included a fulltime teen librarian, funding for youth programs and a police liaison. Other new projects and items for 2016 include the new fulltime fire chief, Chris Garrison, fiber to the home project, the treatment of Ash trees for the Emerald Ash Bore, development of a financial management plan and development of a comprehensive plan for the city.  The mayor discussed topics for future consideration that included public works, the volunteer fire department, diversity in city government, availability of workforce housing and transportation challenges.  The city is also recruiting  for poll workers and police officers.  Check the city website for more information, www.cityofsunprairie.com.
 
Other Rotary News:
 
  • Rotary District 6250 approved a matching grant for $5000 for the Colonial Club Fund the Bus project.  SP Rotary is providing $5000 that is matched by the district.  This will go towards the purchase of a replacement bus that will be used to transport senior adults in Dane County to the Colonial Club for adult day care services and the nutrition program.  Rotarians will have an opportunity to participate by driving the bus, which transports senior adults, to the weekly Sunshine Supper on Monday evenings.
  • Fr. Mike Tess visited the meeting to discuss the Sun Prairie Involved in Children's Education (SPICE) program for 2016.  Rotarians are asked to participate by volunteering an hour/week for a 5th grade class as a mentor.  Dan Presser will be the contact for SP Rotary if you would like to be involved.
  • Tom Hebl, Sue Halambeck and Beth Mielcarek received Paul Harris Fellows! Thank you for  your support of the Foundation.
  • Ads for the Pancake breakfast are due no later than Tuesday, Feb 2. Contact Mark Olsen for additional information.

  • If Sun Prairie schools are closed due to the weather, the Colonial Club is also closed.  If it falls on a Tuesday, the Rotary meeting is also canceled.
